20/1a. Arrived with a broken mug.

31 01 2008

It was a stupid mistake to bring my favourite mug in my hardy hush puppy luggage, thinking that nothing would be breakable in the safe compartments of the sturdy frame. Boy I was wrong. When I opened my luggage 2 hours ago I found the large mug in bits and pieces, not to mention, remnants of it all over my luggage.

29 hours later, I’m here in United States. Elon, North Carolina to be exact.

The journey definitely had its own set of fun moments and boring sessions (read: sian), like how ZL was given the ‘full treatment’ in two out of the three airports, and the pathetic countdown on the twelve-hour NRT-DTW leg. That was really painful, given that there was no personal in flight entertainment system. And the movie looked boring.

The 2nd transit was pretty painful. we arrived too early, and ended up with about 5 hours in transit. With the city a little too expensive by cab and too far by bus away, we chose to stay in the transit lounge instead. We slept at the starbucks sofas.

I’m too lazy to upload photos now. But I must say that DTW’s tunnel is pretty nice and glowy, albeit a lil creepy at times.

Fast forward to 2 hours ago. I got into my room, saw the state of the room and wanted to cry. Unpacking and cleaning, my two most hated activity, and I’ve got to do them both. How sucky is that. Now I appreciate the humidity in Singapore. At least when things are moist, they are easier to clean.

Alright. It’s over 1am, and I need to sleep. More tomorrow!

My Own Adventures

16 01 2008

Looking at everyone else’s blogs make me a little green with envy. All of them tell of the excitement of a semester away from home, immersing themselves in new culture, making new friends, with loads of pictures to tell a lot more than the already plentiful words.

I wonder if my own adventure would be as wonderful. Ha.

Finally it’s closing in, with a little less than 2 weeks to departure. My little part time job isn’t exactly working out fine, with the briefing only conducted tomorrow, god knows when can I finish my share of the job.

Screw that job. Ha.

I’ve been spending a lot recently, on mom’s card, nonetheless. Bought a new jacket today. Supposed to be a windbreaker / winter jacket of sorts, and it’s probably my only one. Bought it off G2000 sale, since they are selling all the wintry apparels at a steal for now. 80 bucks for what was retailing at 300. Woots.

(No wonder woots was one of the most used words in 07. =p)

And I bought more books from borders today. I think i’m just damn scared of being bored in US. That i’ve been buying a lot of stuffs recently. Especially things to occupy myself. Think I’ll end up having too much entertainment over there. Ha.

Packing is a bitch.

13 01 2008

Sending off mom and watching her pack in the last days she was still in sg made me realized packing for a 20-week trip wasn’t all that piece of cake. Especially when our weather is pretty idiot-proof, as compared to the temperate climate Americans have to put up with.

In all honesty, there a tinge of regret having chosen US for exchange. Chiefly financial concerns. I knew it would be costly, but i didn’t expect it to add up to as much as two year’s (subsidized) tuition fee in NTU. Room and board in US is costly, as everyone with friends in the States would have told you. No wonder college education financing is a challenge to some Americans.

There’s also the concern of safety. Watching Michael Moore’s documentaries has definitely added on to the fear factor, but you cannot deny the fact that it’s a far cry as compared to what we get right here in Singapore. I can’t imagined the night in which I walked to the greyhound station myself just to get the tickets. I must have made someone worried. Ha. Thanks Jem.

But all’s too late. Everything’s settled, and I can only say, best of luck to me and my 20 weeks in US.
